Chicco Launches Digital Interactive Campaign on Times Square Billboard with Aerva Technology

Chicco, an Italian purveyor of baby products, and its agency McCann Erickson, selected Aerva to provide a full technology platform to drive user-generated baby videos from the Chicco website to the American Eagle LED board in Times Square as part of an innovative campaign to increase Chicco brand awareness in the US.

As part of the “Babies Introduce Chicco to the US” campaign, parents submit videos of their babies saying the brandname Chicco, pronounced “KEE-ko,” to the Chicco website chiccousa.com/timessquare. Aerva’s platform of digital out-of-home, mobile and social media allows for a timely and risk-free execution of the campaign, which uses user-generated content (UGC) managed through the Aerva content management system. The videos are displayed on the chiccousa.com website and on the American Eagle LED board in Times Square. Aerva’s technology captures the best “Keepsake Photograph” and sends it back to the parents, allowing them to then share the photo on Twitter and Facebook.

The campaign runs through March 13, 2011 and will play the baby videos twice an hour for 10 minutes each hour on the giant billboard at Broadway and West 46th Street. Universal McCann and OAG handled the media placement for the campaign.

To promote Aerva’s digital interactive campaign, McCann is doing other outreach through print advertisements, web content, mom bloggers, and through online ads that include a special webcam banner through which the videos can be uploaded. This has given the campaign a presence in social media networks like Facebook and Twitter. The Chicco campaign, which carries the theme “If you say it right, it makes you smile,” has seen this strong global brand grow substantially in the US and currently sells products in chains like Babies “R” Us, BuyBuy Baby, Toys “R” Us and, as of last month, Target.

Aerva collaborated closely with the American Eagle LED board team as well as Hush, a design company, for the Chicco minisite. All the videos are displayed on the American Eagle billboard and are projected onto a 15,000-square foot screen, 25 stories high, for all of Times Square to see. A camera pointed at the billboard captures a photo of the video playing and emails it to the parent for them to see their submission in action.

Aerva also provides metrics to the brand and its agency
on UCG submissions and percentage accepted/rejected.

Aerva proud sponsor of The Ad Club’s 50th Hatch Awards

For the past 50 years, The Hatch Awards have been New England’s premier creative awards show. Aerva and the Ad Club celebrated this year’s winners and 50 years of creative excellence in advertising.

Aerva featured interactive digital technology on a gigantic three story screen including Pic2Screen, which allowed people to send in their own photos to be displayed on the screen. Aerva Poll2Screen ran two live SMS polls for people to vote for their favorite print and online ads. Results for the polls were displayed live all night in the beautiful Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theater reception hall.

“Many local brands have been honored by the Hatch Awards over the past 50 years, including John Hancock, Liberty Mutual, Dunkin Donuts, Ocean Spray and Fidelity,” said Kathy Kiely, president of The Ad Club. “This year’s winners were honored for their traditional work, as well as for their creative work in digital, mobile, social media and web categories. While our platforms have changed over time, the marketing fact remains – ‘a great idea is great forever.’”

In addition to well known agencies such as Arnold Worldwide, Hill Holliday and Mullen, newer agencies in the Hatch 50 spotlight included Allen & Gerritsen, Brand Content, Fort Franklin, Full Contact, PJA Advertising, BEAM Interactive, MMB and NAIL.

About the Hatch Awards – Fifty years ago, the leaders of the Greater Boston advertising community began the tradition of honoring their peers for creative excellence in their field. In choosing the title of this event, it was decided that it would carry the name of a person who was respected for the qualities for which the Advertising Club stood. That name was unanimously selected: Francis W. Hatch.

Aerva Technology for Showdown at Symphony

Aerva was proud to be an Enhanced Silver Sponsor at Showdown at Symphony which featured four of the best squash players in the world in a one-night, World Squash Champions Challenge at Boston’s historic Symphony Hall. Current World No. 1 Ramy Ashour of Egypt, 2009 World No. 1 Gregory Gaultier of France and 2008/07 World No. 1 Amr Shabana of Egypt, and 2006 World No. 1 Jonathon Power of Canada compete on a state-of-the-art glass court before an avid squash audience.

Aerva technology enabled the audience to participate in the event by sending in their photos, text messages and poll choices via SMS. Several large digital displays prominently featured Aerva’s suite of interactive widgets: Pic2Screen, Text2Screen, and Poll2Screen as well as sponsorship content. Aerva Twitter widget pulled the most up to date messages with #squashshowdown in it.

Sponsors enjoyed complimentary courtside, fine dining (Pops-style) while ticket holders gazed down on all the world class action from the Hall’s famous balconies. The evening’s fast-paced format ensures an action-packed experience as all players competed twice in a mini-tournament featuring shortened game scoring and shootout tiebreakers.

The single-game, bronze exhibition match introduced the evening’s guests to the first-ever “So, You Think You Can Ref?” mobile interactivity model. Each player was allowed two lifelines where they can ask the audience to use Aerva Poll2Screen to vote on whether they agree or disagree with the ref’s call. Shabana used his first lifeline on the first volley’s out call. An overwhelming 67% agreed with the ref’s call, giving Power the lead, 1-0.

Power wasted no time bringing the score to 4-0. Tightly working the T, he furthered his lead to 7-2. A stroke to Shabana had Power using his first lifeline and with the audience agreeing, he saved the point. Shabana’s fourth point was a deadly lob into the left corner just above the tin, starting what appeared to be a run. But an out ball gave Power a 9-4 lead. At 10-4, Power easily put out the lights out on the “So, You Think You Can Ref?” exhibition match, winning 11-4.

The crowd was captivated by the matches and sent in their comments to the digital screens using their cell phones and Aerva Text2Screen. One squash fan texted in, “if you thought THAT was contact, you haven’t played at the BRC!” People were joining the ongoing conversations on the screens.

Kodak Billboard in Times Square used for Diabetes Awareness

On Thursday, August 26th, The Diabetes Dude and over 50 of his closest friends descended upon New York City with blue flamingos in hand doing the “Flamingo Flock” for diabetes awareness.

The Flamingo Flock diabetes awareness campaign is the brainchild of 9-year-old Noah Brokmeier, “The Diabetes Dude” of Taunton, Massachusetts. Noah’s blue flamingos are landing nationwide appearances at big events like the Today Show, Boston Marathon, Bret Michaels concerts as well as to many others across the country. Wherever the blue flamingos go, they pose for pictures, which are then posted on Noah’s website, www.thediabetesdude.com. The location of the birds is also flagged on his “official flamingo tracking map,” to show the progress and growth of the campaign.

In a never before Kodak Billboard diabetes campaign, The Diabetes Dude had hundreds of families affected by diabetes submit their photos to the Times Square Kodak Billboard where the messages of hope, resilience and education reached millions of New Yorkers during this Flocking. Kodak’s “Smile Gallery”, powered by Aerva’s Pic2Screen application, allow people to email their photos to kodak@aerva.com with a caption and have it show up on the huge public display. The Diabetes Dude and friends used this opportunity to flood the Kodak Billboard with their images to raise awareness.

“When we were presented with the opportunity for submitting photos to Kodak for diabetes awareness we were ecstatic,” said Laura Houston of Plano, Texas and mom to Nate Houston who has Type 1 diabetes. “Seeing Nate’s picture on the Times Square Kodak Billboard was a special moment for our family filled with heartfelt emotion. As we reach Nate’s one year anniversary since his diabetes diagnosis, we are grateful for all the support we have received and for all the opportunities to spread the message of hope to others. Kodak helps make this happen.”

Here is how you can try it too:
1) Send your photo to kodak@aerva.com with an optional caption in the subject line.
2) Allow Kodak can approve your photo.
3) Once approved, you will receive an approval code.
4) Using the code, you can then upload your photo on the Kodak LED screen up to six times within 30-day period.

Leading up to the Kodak Flocking, the group was spotted Flocking the Today Show in Rockefeller Center. They met with Ann Curry and the newly crowned Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete. The Flockers drove throughout the night from Massachusetts getting on a charter bus at 1:00 am in the morning so they could arrive early enough at the Today Show to get those prized spots.

“I’d like to thank Kodak and Aerva for this great opportunity for helping me spread the message of hope to all those living with diabetes,” said The Diabetes Dude. “What I’m trying to do is get the word out about Type 1 diabetes and ways to treat it because not many people understood it when I was diagnosed at age 6. For me, a few things helped make a big difference – talking to other kids with diabetes, learning about diabetes with my family and using a cool tubeless insulin pump called the OmniPod,” continued Noah. “It helps me be a normal kid and do important things, like raise diabetes awareness. My hope is that my Blue Flamingo Flock campaign will help young people who are diagnosed at an early age to have as much information as possible.”

Kodak Uses Pic2Screen in Times Square

Kodak’s “Smile Gallery” at Times Square, New York, powered by Aerva’s Pic2Screen application, allows people to email their pictures and have it show up on the huge digital display. This is part of Kodak’s year-long “It’s time to Smile” campaign which was launched in summer of 2009.

Check out what is up there right now!
Live EarthCam feed of Times Square

It’s Time to Smile

According to Tom Hoehn, Director, Brand Communications and New Media at Kodak, “The recently upgraded huge digital display on the 50-yard line of the Crossroads of the World is now networked. The cool part about it is that you control when it shows up.”
See Tom’s blog.

Aerva’s Pic2Screen application accepts pictures via email to kodak@aerva.com with optional captions on the “Subject:” line. Users get immediate acknowledgement of their image along with disclaimers about use of the picture on the display and criteria for acceptance. Kodak team uses Aerva’s Photo Moderation web application, which allows batch acceptance, rejection of images for high throughput, especially at busy times like New Year’s eve at Times Square. Multiple moderators from across the globe can help moderate the images. The Photo Moderation tool also allows Kodak to remove or edit captions for appropriateness, length, etc

The User is In Control

All users get an email upon moderation. Accepted images get a code that users can use to text in when they
want to see their photo, thus making the “Smile Gallery” a destination and the user in control of when the picture will show. The same trigger code can be used up to 6 times during the campaign period. All rejected images are given reasons why they are rejected, usually for picture quality, inappropriate content, including explicit advertising of brands, logos, etc.

Here is how to do it:

1) Send your photo to sokodak@aerva.com with a short caption in the subject line.
2) Then give it a few minutes so Kodak can approve your photo.
3) Once approved, you will receive an approval email with a short alpha-numeric code.
4) Using the code, you can then trigger your image on the board up to six times. The picture will also display randomly in-between the adverts.

The Technology

Aerva’s Pic2Screen application uses three technology platforms, 1) digital signage platform called erchannel, which allows scheduling of any content type on any kind of digital display anywhere in the world, and 2) mobile interactivity platform called MoApp, which allows text message interaction between users’ handsets and any number of Aerva applications such as Pic2Screen, finally, 3) Aerva’s cloud computing backend is also involved and provides scalability as well as virtualization so that images can be processed at very high throughputs and user texts accepted and acknowledgements in similarly scalable manner.
